If you want to break your phone addiction, start with your Home Screen. This is the first thing you see when you unlock your phone and for many of us, it’s the first step down the rabbit hole of distractions that keeps us sucked into our phones.
With a minimalist Home Screen, you can change your phone from being an engine for distraction to a clean, intentional space that supports your priorities. Today I want to show you how to build one that works for you.
Step 1: Start With A Clean Slate

Remove everything…and I mean everything from your Home Screen. Place all your apps in your App Library or on your secondary pages. The goal here is to start from zero and rebuild intentionality.
Step 2: Identify Your Core Functions
Ask yourself: What do I actually use my phone for every day that improves my life? Maybe you use it for maps, messages, or your calendar. Choose no more than 4-6 apps that genuinely serve your goals.

Step 3: Hide The Temptations
Move addictive apps such as social media, games, or shopping off your Home Screen. Even better, move them off your phone entirely. Out of sight isn’t out of mind forever, but it does create just enough friction to break unconscious habits.
Step 4: Use Widgets Wisely
A well-chosen widget can give you useful information without requiring you to open multiple apps. Avoid widgets that update constantly or encourage scrolling.
One of my favorites is the Smart Stack on the iPhone. I’ve got mine set so that I can quickly look through my calendar, daily task lists, and access my Podcasts all without having to open multiple apps.

Step 5: Choose A Calming Background
Skip the flashy wallpapers. Go for something neutral, clean, and low contrast. The less visual clutter you have, the less mental clutter you will incur.
Step 6: Revisit Regularly
Digital minimalism is a living practice. Every month or so review your Home Screen. If something isn’t serving you anymore, move it to a different screen.
The Result

Your phone transforms from a constant source of noise into a quiet, functional tool. It’s important to note that just changing your Home Screen won’t change your habits overnight. However, it will create an environment where healthier habits can grow.
